Eligibility Criteria for India Post GDS Recruitment 2026
Educational Qualification
Candidates must have passed the Secondary School Examination (Class 10) from a recognized Board of School Education in India, with passing marks in Mathematics and English. Equivalent qualifications from other boards are not eligible under the notification.
The candidate must also have studied the prescribed local language up to Class 10 for the relevant Postal Circle/area. Special local-language provisions apply in Arunachal Pradesh, Goa, Sikkim and Nagaland.

- Upper-age relaxation: SC/ST 5 years, OBC 3 years, PwBD 10 years, PwBD+OBC 13 years and PwBD+SC/ST 15 years. No upper-age relaxation is provided to EWS applicants.
Local Language Requirement
The prescribed local language depends on the Postal Circle and the area selected by the candidate. Examples include Telugu for Andhra Pradesh, Hindi for Bihar and several Hindi-speaking circles, Bengali for West Bengal, Marathi for Maharashtra, Tamil for Tamil Nadu, Telugu for Telangana, Hindi for Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand, and the specified regional languages/dialects for North Eastern areas. Candidates must check the applicable language requirement before selecting a Division.

The notification states that TRCA carries an annual increase of 3%, subject to the prescribed conditions. GDS are not regular Central Government employees and their emoluments and entitlements are not at par with regular Central Government employees.
Selection Process for India Post GDS 2026
- System-generated merit list based on Class 10 marks/converted grades or points.
- Shortlisting and communication through the GDS Online Engagement Portal, SMS and email.
- Physical verification of original documents.
- Pre-engagement formalities, including prescribed basic training and accommodation requirements where applicable.
- Provisional engagement followed by required verification and final engagement.
No written examination or interview is prescribed. Merit is prepared from Secondary School Examination (Class 10) marks, aggregated to percentage with accuracy up to four decimal places. Specific grade/CGPA conversion rules and tie-breaking priorities are prescribed in the notification.
Scheme of Selection and Merit Calculation
The merit list is system-generated using Class 10 marks. Where only grades/points are available, the prescribed conversion factor of 9.5 is used. Where CGPA is available, the CGPA is multiplied by 9.5. The notification also specifies rules for boards providing both marks and grades, and a detailed tie-breaking order based on age, category and gender/transgender status.
Registration and Examination Fee
The application fee is ₹100 for applicants required to pay the fee. Fee exemption is provided to all female applicants, SC/ST applicants, PwBD applicants and Transwomen applicants. Eligible applicants can pay online using available Credit/Debit Card, Net Banking or UPI options. The fee is non-refundable.
Service Conditions and Job Profile
GDS are Civil Post holders outside the regular civil services of the Union and are governed by the GDS (Conduct and Engagement) Rules, 2020. They generally serve in rural areas and are required to work for a minimum of four hours and maximum of five hours per day, subject to the rules.
- BPM: Responsible for day-to-day Branch Post Office and India Post Payments Bank operations, postal services, mail conveyance/delivery, customer service and marketing activities. A selected BPM must arrange suitable accommodation for the Branch Post Office and reside in the post village.
- ABPM: Performs stamp/stationery sales, mail conveyance and delivery, IPPB transactions, assists the BPM and may perform combined BPM duties when required. The ABPM is required to reside within the delivery jurisdiction of the concerned Post Office.
- Dak Sevak: May work in Post Offices, Sorting/Mail Offices, Transit Mail Offices or Delivery Centres and perform mail handling, delivery, parcel handling, IPPB-related work, customer service, marketing and other assigned duties. Residence is required within the delivery jurisdiction of the attached Post Office.
Reservation and Document Verification
Reservation provisions apply for SC, ST, OBC, EWS and PwBD categories as prescribed by the Department of Posts. Candidates claiming reservation or age relaxation must produce valid certificates in the prescribed format during physical verification.
Shortlisted candidates must report to the designated Divisional/Unit Head within 15 days of shortlisting for physical verification. Required documents may include the Class 10 marksheet, identity proof, caste/EWS/PwBD/transgender certificates where applicable, date-of-birth proof, compulsory medical certificate and prescribed local-language/dialect certificate for specified States.
